All About River Otters

The river otter has webbed feet and a flat tail to help them swim. Adult river otters are 3-5 feet long.

They always live near water. River otters dig their own den. They make thier dens under logs or in riverbanks. The den is supplied with air by a narrow passage opening above the water line.

River otters eat mostly fish but they will also eat crayfish and frogs. Sometimes they will go for a yummy crab. River otters also go for animals on land like mice, small birds, and eggs.

River otters live in North America. Some live in the U.S but most live in Canada.

Their ears and nostrills close when they are under water to stop water from getting in. Otters have whiskers to feel in murky water.

River otters sometimes share dens with beavers. The otters fur traps air to help them float on water. They can hold their breath for 5 minutes.

Female otters give birth to 1 to 6 cubs in their life time. The litter stay with their mother for 1 year. River otters live to about 12 years in the wild. Breeding season is in winter.
