Problem of the Day!Everytime I toss a coin, I have a 50/50 chance of landing on heads or tails. So if I toss a coin 30 times, i'd get 15 heads and 15 tails. Right?Within your groups, quietly discuss the probability of this happening and record your thoughts. Then, perform the task and record your results. Have your thoughts changed or are they still the same?

What I want you to achieve.1. Describe probabilities using fractions, decimals & percentages.2. Use digital technology to conduct chance experiments with small and large numbers of trials.


How is probability measured by experiment?

Define the terms impossible, certain, unlikely, likely, even chance, 50/50, buckley's chance. Can you think of other terms that fit on the probability line?

Draw a probability line in your workbooks. Place the above terms along it.Watch the video on calculating probability which defines the values of probability from 0 to 1. It also demonstrates the ways fractions, decimals and percentages fit along the line.Draw a new probability line in your workbook and use fractions, decimals and percentages to display where a quarter, half and three quarters fit along the line.

ActivityAfter watching the video, use the interactive spinner website to conduct a chance experiment. You may design your spinner first. Then list expected probabilities. Finally, perform your experiment using a small number of trials (20) and then a large number of trials (100). Record your results. Discuss the differences between the expected and observed probabilities in both trials.

Activity 1At the activity centre you will find sets of spinners, dice and decks of cards.Select one of the options (first in, first served) and explore the probabilities offered.Record your findings.Activity 2Each of you write down 5 events that will fit along the probability line.Swap lists with a member of your group and get them to order the events from Probability of 0 to 1.Discuss results.
