Who discovered the X-Rays?

X-Rays: Then vs. Now

What are the advantages and disadvantages of X-Rays?

-On November 8th 1895, German physicist Whilhelm Rontgen discovered the X-rays.-He accidentally made the discovery when testing wether cathode rays could pass through glass when he noticed a glow coming from a nearby chemical coated screen.-He named them "X-Rays" because of their unknown nature.

By using an X-Ray machine, these rays have become very useful in every day life. X-Rays have become extremely important for medical use.

What are X-Rays used for?

Some uses for X-Rays are:-To look at broken bones-To monitor the progression of a disease (Osteoporosis)-See through luggage at the airport-To get dental X-Rays at the dentist or orthodontist

Advantages:-Faster to do than an MRI:X-Rays take about 5 minutes while an MRI can take several hours-Gives you a clear image of structures inside the body-Non-invasive and painless:Doesn't require any injections or preperation and is entirely painless.Disadvantages:-High doses of radiation can pose health risks, such as increasing your risk of getting cancer-Not safe for pregnant women-If you are exposed to too much radiation, it is possible for the rays to damage your DNA and cause death (very rarely) from radiation sickness.

-A patient is positioned so that the part of the body being scanned is between the machine and the x-ray detector. -When the machine is turned on, the rays travel through the body and are absorbed in different amounts by tissues, depending on the density of the tissues they pass through. -Bone structures appear white and other strucutres that are less dense appear grey.

Bones appear white because they are more dense
