World War One

An overview of (some of) the important events

Time Line

1914

The Start of The War

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to Austria-Hungary) by Serbian Nationalist caused the collapse of the alliance systems and threw the world into WWI, as explained by the video above

Throughout 1915, Germany dominated with the help of their naval powers and the creation of the U-boat. Most notably, the conflict escalated when Germany sank the RMS Lusitania

In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson issued his 14 points which, most importantly, created the League of Nations. Although the Treaty of Versailes, which ended the war in June of 1919, did not reflect these values, Wilson's work would still be heavily influential in future diplomacy.

In this year, Germany issues the Zimmerman Note, which offered to Mexico an opportunity to support Germany during the war.

Upon this finding, the US declared war on Germany on April 6th and was now officially involved in World War One.

The creation of secret Alliance systems prior to 1914 caused a lot of tension throughout Europe and meant war was highly probable for most countries
