World War One

The Battle of Liege was the opening battle of the German invasion of Belgium and the first battle of World War I. It began on 5 August 1914 and lasted until 16 August when the last fort surrendered. The initial aim of von Bulow's Second Army was to seize the city of Liege however Liege was defended by a ring of twelve heavily armed forts.

The longest battle of World War I and was one of the bloodiest1917 - The United States declares war on Germany.1918 - German Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates and flees Germany.1919 - The Treaty of Versailles officially ends WWI.

The aftermath of the Battle of Liege resulted in 5 521 civilian killings in Belgium and 896 killings in France.Another result of the battle was that it would intimidate any other country that would apose the Germans. Germany would also not have taken full control of France and Belgium if they lost the Battle of Liege.

Lasting Impact

One of the lasting impacts of WWI is that it set the stages for WW2. Also, many peace treaties were made between Europe and America.
