World War II Timeline
April 12: President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies unexpectedly of a stroke. The U.S. grieves for the loss of their beloved president. Vice-president Harry Truman is sworn into office.
February 19: US Marines capture the strategic island of Iwo Jima in the Pacific.
1945
May 7: Germany finally gives up and surrenders to the Allies! This day is remembered as VE Day.
August 6: An atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima, Japan after an ignored ultimatum.August 9: Three days later another atomic bomb destroys Nagasaki, Japan. Both bombs were dropped on cities that contained factories for war materials. Over 120,000 people died.
September 2: Japan surrenders to the Allies! The war is finally over! (Yay!)
