The New American PasstimeThe Breakthrough idea was a combination of baseball and softball. This was played by women with the regulations of softball, but the basepaths and running rules of baseball. The AAGBBL began in 1943.

The War BeginsAfter the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States joined the war. This required many young, able men to be recruited into the army.

Major League players leave for warThose who played Major League Baseball were the age that the army was looking for. Players like Joe DeMaggio traided their baseball jerseys for military uniforms.

The Interest in Baseball DeclinesDue to the best players being recruited to the army, the interest in baseball declined. There was speculation that baseball would be suspended during the war.

How Baseball was Affected by the War.

Philip K. WrigleyWrigley was the owner of the Cubs as well as the chewing gum company. He was the one who came up with a breakthrough idea to continue baseball as Roosevelt wanted.
