ALGERIA~ 1943

British forces under Bernard Montgomery, took Tripoli on January 24 and by the first week of February, they had crossed into Tunisia. On February 14, German forces launched a major offensive - more experienced and better outfitted German tank divisions easily out-performed the Americans and their machines. A worse disaster was only avoided by the arrival of re-enforcements from more battle-tested British units.

It began with British forces skipping across the Strait of Messina to Calabria. A few days later, more British and American forces landed several hundred miles to the north at Salerno. Their plan was simple: the northern forces would throw a net across the Italian peninsula while the British army chased the Germans into it from the south.

Norman Knapton is a brave vetran who went to war in 1943-1945. When Norman was stationed at these places he was working in the back trying to find the other countries plans. Even though Norman was fighting for peace in the United Kingdom he is still my biggest hero. Trying to find other countries plans is very difficult. I am very happy to call this spectacular man my grandad! He has been my hero ever since I was born. Grandad is now 91 years old and has wonderful health I am blessed to have this man as my grandad.

The exiled Greek government also formed armed forces of its own, which served and fought alongside the British in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy. The country was devastated by war and occupation, and its economy and infrastructure lay in ruins. Greece suffered more than 400,000 casualties during the occupation, and the country's Jewish community was almost completely exterminated in the Holocaust. By 1946, however, a vicious civil war erupted between the British and American-sponsored conservative government and leftist guerrillas, which would last until 1949
