Tanks

Machine Guns

The importance of the Machine Gun was to fire against rapidly advancing enemy infantry troops. It impacted WW1 because at first it was used for defense but later in the war were apart of infantry assaults. The bad thing about these machine guns were that they would over heat. Hiram Mixam was the first to make the early Machine Guns. Weighing 62kg, usually form with a tripod position and could fire up to 600 rounds per minute. Although some officers didn't like the machine gun because as the quote says "The Machine Gun is a much to over rated gun."

In WW1 tanks were important because they were used to cross difficult terrain such as the No Man's Land. The makings of the tank impacted WW1 because it stopped trench warfare. Although they impacted the war most of these early tanks broke down consistently because of engine failure. We have Richard Edgeworth to thank for these huge mechanical monsters. His earliest designs, in 1770 were made with a caterpillar track and had steamed power engines. "..lumbering toward us came three huge mechanical monsters such as we had never seen before." said a German fighter as the Allies broke through German defenses

Airplanes

Flamethrower

The Rifle was a high advance weapon which made it important in WW1. The bayonet was also important because it was used in short range combat to stab the enemy. It impacted the war because soldiers were able to shoot from long ranges as well. The Rifle, just as any other weapon, had problems. Bolt action Rifles took too long to reload and the Bayonet would often get stuck in bodies and soldiers had trouble taking them out of the enemy body. Johann Nikolaus Von Dreyse was the first to make the Bolt action Rifle w/ the Bayonet in 1824.

The importance of the airplanes was to prevent their enemies from completing their mission by shooting them out the sky. Airplanes impacted the war because they flew so high that they could bomb the enemy from high altitudes. However, the machine guns that the airplanes carried fired through the propeller and would severely damage it. A quote from a German Pilot "I Thought of what accurate stream of lead I could send into a plane."
