After the retreat from Gallipoli, most Australian soldiers eventually became involved in the trench warfare of the Western Front. Despite repeated attempts, little ground was won and kept between 1916 and 1918.The war became one that had to be grimly endured, and the first flush of enthusiasm for the war and the thrilling achievement at Gallipoli soon led to a more harsh and realistic attitude towards war as the death and casualty lists increased over time

Dear Mum and Emma,I’m doing great, it’s all pretty calm, Marcus and I are almost about to enter the trenches at Gallipoli. They say the trenches are pretty bad, but I’m thinking it will be all good. Germans are everywhere and I know we will make it. I’m going to do my best to make you proud and help my country. I will make you proud mother. We can hear lots of whooshing gunfire zipping from everywhere. Bombs are dropping from planes, exploding right on top of us. We’re pretty protected in these tunnels of dirt and filth, but many of our troops are falling being cut down like corn stalks. Luckily we’re still standing tall and brave. Marcus Birney and I are keeping each other safe by sticking together and looking out for each other. I managed to save Marcus from the bullet of a German soldier, I shot him in the chest, and we celebrated and thanked each other for that. I can’t wait until I get home and see you all, (mum and Emma), I really miss you all and we are all hoping that the war will finish soon. We think of the homeland and dream of all the places we hold dear to our hearts. Just knowing you are safe and sound helps us to soldier on. The wind is strong and blowing us away like leaves and luckily it’s not snowing here, I’ve made many new friends and the food isn’t that bad. We eat corn beef in cans and biscuits that are as hard as rocks, but they are good enough to fill rumbling tummies. We all have extra clothes on to keep war and I’m getting plenty of rest, waiting for the Germans to attack. How is Emma and you all going?I hope Emma is doing great and I’m excited about seeing my new little sister when the war is over. I miss you all and I hope you guys understand that im all good and safe. I want you to be happy.Your loving and caring son and brother,Adam Wingleton-soldier of world war 1

world war 1

First World War or the Great War, was a global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war

The landing at Gallipoli was a major event in the war. Even though the Gallipoli campaign was a military defeat, it helped to provide Australians with a new sense of their identity and place in the world. Many men enlisted to help there country.

1.They went with songs to the battle, they were young.2. Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.3. through the rough leaves of Gallipoli.4. They fell with their faces to the foe.5. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:6. Age shall not weary them, nor do the years condemn.7. at the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.
