Toward's the end of the school year, the other kids at school made August feel like he was just like them. In the book it states, ¨ And now that they'd protected me, I was different to them. It was like I was one of them.¨ Others no longer treated him different, the people around him had the realization that August was just like them.

In the begining of the book, August Pullman, a boy with a craniofacial disorder, will enroll for school for the very first time. In the book, it states, ¨They would take the longest way around me, like I had some germ to catch, like my face was contagious.¨ It also states, ¨ Rat boy. Freak. Monster. Freddy Krueger. E.T. Gross Out. Lizard Face. Mutant. I know the names they call me.¨ August felt more self consious about himself even more so in a crowded school filled with judgemental fifth graders.

August is just one comparision to so many other kids that go through standing out and being different. Many people are different and people treat them that way. Whether it was a recent change, or an old one.
