Women's Role in the Army
About seventy percent of women who served in the military during World War II held traditionally "female" jobs. They worked as typists, clerks, and mail sorters.
Women also drove trucks, repaired airplanes, worked as laboratory technicians, served as radio operators, flew military aircraft across the country, and test-flew newly repaired planes.
Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent.
