Winter Solstice

The passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated by the winter solstice sunrise, on the shortest day of the year. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for seventeen minutes at dawn on the winter solstice

Above the entrance to the passage at Newgrange there is a opening called a roof-box. Its purpose is to allow sunlight to travel through the chamber on the shortest days of the year.

The sun's rays travel through the roof box and light up the passage.
