Did you know that a single wind turbine can power 500 homes!
Created by: Rose McCullough & Grace Bohlander
There are arguments that wind turbines kill too many birds with the large blades rotating. Other scientists say that more birds are killed by other sources such as: domestic cats, power lines, pesticides, automobiles, and lighted communication towers. Wind turbines are at the bottom of the list, killing about 20,000 birds per year. The first one on the list is domestic cats, killing hundreds of millions birds annually.
The three main parts of a wind turbine are: the rotor blades, the shaft, and the generator. The simplest form of a windmill was used as early as 2000 B.C in ancient Babylon.
that in mind, the technology used today creates taller wind turbines in order to receive very fast wind speeds. For very large wind turbines, the rotors span over 100 yards. The tower itself usually reaches a height of over 20 stories high! Larger than you thought! Right? These exceptionally large turbines can create enough electricity for 1,400 homes! Wow!

At a speed of 15 meters per second, wind turbines create their maximum power. The wind turbine will receive more wind speed if the turbine itself is taller. There is resistance at lower altitudes and this resistance slows the wind down. However, the higher the altitude, the thinner the air. With thinner air, it is easier for the wind to push the still air out of the way and thus go way faster. With
With today's technology, what is the optimum wind speed for wind turbines?
Guess What!Wind power is currently the fastest growing source of electricity production in the world!!!
