Probably the most famous speech from Shakespeare's most famous play is in Act 3, Scene 1 of HAMLET the so-called "To be or not to be" speech. Actor Kenneth Branaugh does a great job of capturing the Danish prince's extreme melancholy and angst.

Shakespeare wrote plays about love (called comedies), plays about important kings (called histories), and plays about tragic situations (called tragedies). He also wrote many 14-lined poems called sonnets.

Shakespeare never actually wrote down his plays in book form. He may have scribbled down some notes, but most of his words were committed to memory by the actors. His plays were written out and published by his friends after he died.

William Shakepeare (15 -1616) is regarded by many as the one of the greatest playwrights in the history of the English language. Born in Stratford-on-Avon in England, he was the son of the town glovemaker and had only a basic education. As an adult, he moved to London to pursue acting and writing. He
