Background:• Born and educated in New York• NY state senator in 1830• NY governor 1838 to 1840• US senator 1849: key antislavery politician• Runner in Republican nomination for 1860 election: but too radical, Lincoln nominated instead• Became Secretary of State under Lincoln: March 1861 to March 1869• Negotiated the Alaska Purchase from Russia in 1867

Supporting the Abolitionist movement• As NY governor, ensured that fugitive slaves were guaranteed a trial by jury• 1846 Freeman: Defended a free black man convicted of murder, under mental health issue argument• Successfully argued California's admittance to the Union as a free state• 1850 & 1858: Gave public speeches on the issues of slavery, risking his political career• As Secretary of State, focused efforts on preventing foreign recognition of the Confederacy

What makes him noteworthy?• Harbored fugitive slaves in his home in Auburn, NY as part of the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD!• Influenced drafting of the Emancipation Proclamation and was a signer
