Early Life

William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897. He was named after his great grandfather William Clark Falkner, who was an important influence on William Faulkner. He was raised by Caroline Barr, a black nanny whom he called mammy. Barr influenced Faulkners artistic and creative southern writting. His mother and grandmother were both great readers, paintersm and photographers. It is believed that this influenced his visual language, but lifelong education given by Caroline is said to be the central of his novels with the politics of sexuality and race.

William Faulkner never graduated from high school, but continued to have a creative mind. Faulkner wrote poetry but did not wrtie his first novel until 1925. When he was 17, he met Philip Stone, who later became a very important influence on his writing. Stone was very impressed by Faulkner's poetry. Stone became a "literary mentor" to Faulkner. William became known for his faithful and highly accurate dictation of Southern speech. He pointed out social issues, including slavery, good old boys club and Southern aristocracy.

Faulkner met Estelle Oldham at a young age. He fell in love wither her, and after dating for a while, another man proposed to her and she said yes. Estelle and her husband divorsed during a peak in Faulkner's Career. Because he was still in love with her, they got married 6 months later. She became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl named Alabama. Tragic struck, and the premature baby died after living for only a few days. Faulkner's collection of short stories, titled "These 13", are dedicated to Estelle and Alabama.On July 6, 1962, William Faulkner dies of a heart attack.
