What's the point of the Syrian Uprising?

This is the president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad. He has served as President since 2000, when he took his father's place, Hafez al-Assad, who led Syria for 30 years until his death.

These are the people of Syria. They started protesting on Jan. 26, 2011. The people are protesting for political reforms and the re-instatement of civil rights.

By the end of January 2012, reported that over 5,000 civilians and protesters have been killed by the Syrian army while 1,000 people have been killed by the anti-government forces.

The nation considers itself a republic and presidential government. It consists of an executive, legislative and judicial branch of Government.

An obvious solution would be a better leader, but also to reform the economy and politics. And lastly to develop a democratic government instead of a dictatorship.
