What is DNA?

DNA, GENETICS, AND CHROMOSOMES

-DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid.-It is a molecule that holds the genetic intructions used in the development of all known living organisms.-It holds biological information.-The shape of a DNA molecule is a double helix.-The two cell strands of DNA that make up th double helix run in opposite directions to each other, making them anti-parallel.- DNA is organized into long structures called chromosomes.-During cell division these chromosomes are duplicated in the process of DNA replication, providing each cell its own complete set of chromosomes.

Chromosomes and Genetics

-Chromosomes are located in the nucleus of DNA.-In humans, each cell holds 23 pairs chromosomes for a total of 46.-22 pairs are found the same in both mean and woman, except the 23rd pair, called the sex chromosomes.-Genes, which are made up of DNA, act as instructions to make protein molecules.-Every person has two copies of each gene, one inherited from each parent.-Most genes are the same in all people, but a few genes are slightly different between people. -These genes have small differences in their sequence of DNA.
