First Oil WellEdwin L. Drake developed a method for extracting oil from the ground. Before his invention, people depended mainly on vegetable oils, then whale oil became the main source of oil for lamps and more. His invention put the whaling industry out of business and the modern pertroleum industry was born.

Historic Use Of OilMore than 4,000 years ago, it is known that the towers of Babylon were built using a form of petroleum oil called asphalt. Oil is known to be used throughout history. It has been used as a fuel for oil lamps and even as a form of medicine in Ancient Persia. Today, it is one of the worlds most important products.
