AppearanceWhale sharks mouths can be up to 4 feet wide and its mouth is at the front of its head. They have 2 fins on their back and 2 fins on each side. They can grow up to 46 feet long and weigh up to 15 tons. Whale sharks have random yellow dots and stripes on their dark skin. Their skin is 4 inches thick and the whale shark is the largest fish in the world.

Diet They are filter feeders which means they strain small animals from the water. They eat plankton, krill, small fish and squid. They can filter over 1,500 gallons of water per hour.

AdaptationsThey have a spiracle behind their eye which lets them breath when they are laying on the sea floor.

HabitatThey can be found world wide in warm oceans except for the Mediterranean Sea, plus or minus 30 to 40 degrees from the equator. Whale sharks spend most of their time near the surface of the ocean.

BehaviorThey live alone. Whale sharks can reproduce at 30 years old. Females have been found with hundreds of pups and babies are born over 2 feet long. They live to be 100 to 150 years old.

LocomotionWhale sharks swim slowly around 3 mph. They swim by moving their whole body back and forth not just their tale.
