A quest for famous names in the home town

Step #1The visit to the Rovnoye Local Lore Museum

Our discoveries

Each place, either big or a small one, has people it can be proud of. But it's very important to remember them, to keep their legacy, carefully passing it from century to century, no matter what political or other changes can take place in the society. It's great, when once half-forgotten names of our compatriots come back into national culture and history, and we have a chance to get closer to their lives and works. The name of our countryman, Yakov Weber, is one of them. Yakov Weber played a great role in the art life of the Saratov region and our home town as well, his pictures can be regarded as a live textbook on history of rural life of the beginning of the 20th century. Looking at them, we can study the peculiarities of the river navigation on the Volga, see the modest lifestyle of the country people. We, the inhabitants of Rovnoye, are especially thankful to the artist for painting our settlement and its neighbourhood in such a realistic way. Yakov Weber's life sets a good example for all of us: always to stay true to oneself! Weber didn't succumb to his friends' passion to symbolism in painting and stayed true to the Russian national realistic art tradition, being a real master of the Volga landscape. Yakov Weber stayed true to his Motherland, though it had treated him harshly twice.Yakov Weber stayed true to his people.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

From our history&geography of the Saratov region lessons we know what significant role our land has played in the cultural life of Russia. The first of its kind provincial art museum and the first conservatory in a Russian province appeared in Saratov in the end of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th centuries. Saratov gave birth to a number of such world famous artists as A. Bogolyubov, P. Kuznetsov, V. Borisov-Musatov, V. Konovalov. The first symbolist art movement started here from the art exhibition called "Scarlet Rose". But what about the remote corners of the province? What kind of cultural life was there? Did our ancestors make any contribution to the art treasury of the past centuries? So, we start our investigation..

Step #3The visit to the Engels Local Lore Museum

What did we do?We went to the Museum!

What did we do next?We searched the Internet and read books to get as much information about Y.Weber as possible

We learnt that the past of our area is closely connected with the history of the Volga Germans, as Rovnoye had once been the German colony of Zeelman. It turned out that one of its dwellers, the outstanding painter, Yakov Weber, was famous far from its and even Russia's borders for his talent and love to the Motherland. But as it often happens, his name was unfairly forgotten. We got some information on his life in Rovnoye, but unfortunately, we couldn't see his pictures in the local museum. The only painting we could find was a replica from his Volga landscape. Why? We continue our investigation.

The resources we found and used

Step#2

What did we do after we'd got some useful information? So, theoretically prepared we made an excursion to Engels to see the heritage of our famous countryman.

INVESTIGATION

The Engels museum has a valuable and Russia's largest collection of works by Yakov Weber, the graduate of St.Petersburg Academy of Painting, the great master of the Volga and the brilliant landscape painter of the first half of the twentieth century. The museum has been literally trying to restore the paintings of the artist and reopened his name to the city and to the world.
