What is Web 2.0?- Web 2.0 refers to interactive technology that pushes users to intereact through collaboration and sharing instead of just accessing information online (Wango, 2013).- The goal of using Web 2.0 in the classroom is to "enhance teaching and learning performances of teachers and students (Lin & JOu, 2013, p. 157).Should I Use it in My Classroom?BenefitsThere are many benefits to incorporating Web 2.0 technologies into the classroom. With the use of free and easy to use tutorials online and the ability to have teacher-controlled access, many teachers have recently jumped on board (Kovalik et al., 2014). Among the many benefits are: - Collaboration, communication, and interaction among students - Increased excitement, involvement, and motivation of students - Improvement in writing and technology skills - Creation of valuable and customizable projects to demonstrate learning and comprehension - Ease of access to work at home or schoolProblemsAlthough there are many advantages to incorporating Web 2.0 in the classroom, there are also problems that have been identified including: - Lack of access to technologies and funds needed at school and home - Loss of class time teaching new technologies - Technical issues causing frustrations for both teachers and students - Overwhelmed feelings from installing new programs, creating and managing accounts, designing projects, and overcoming technical issuesTips for USing in the ClassroomMany would agree that the benefits outweigh the problems when incorporating Web 2.0 in the classroom. So, here are some tips to get started with Web 2.0 in the calssroom (Wango, 2013) 1. Start Small- Begin with a tool that you are comfortable with. Introduce this to your students and allow them to master it before starting another. 2. Be Prepared- Check to make sure technology works on school computers and networks before the lesson. Have a "plan B" in case there are issues including back-up websites nad paper/ pencil alternatives. 3. Keep the Focus on the Content- Not the Technology- Only use Web 2.0 when it will enhance student learning. Before using the online tools, have students create outlines, write notes, or describe requirements in order to keep the focus on the content instead of mastering the tool. 4. Let Students Take the Lead- You do not have to have all tools mastered before introducing them to the students. Let students learn and discover on their own.

Educational Tools & IdeasTools That Create Virtual Learning Environments- Virtual learning environments are platforms that encourage teaching and learning management. - They can be used for file storage, links, grading, student discussions, tracking student progress, and working collaboratively on assignments within a password-protected digital classroom. - Some examples include: Google Classroom, Blackboard, Dropbox, Canvas, and Edmodo. Tools That Support Collaboration and Relationships- Virtual communication is meant to enocurage collaboration and shared relationships among members of an online commuinty. - They can be used for collaborative online writing where both creation and editing can be done by multiple users or they can take the form of individualized writing by one author where other users have the ability to read and comment.- Examples can include: social netwroking sites such as facebook, Twitter, or Jing; blogs; wikis; and even texting. Tools That Support Teaching and Learning- Web-Based Resources allow for many extensions of teaching and learning in the classroom. These are resources that teachers do not have to build themselves. - These resources come in the form of websites, videos, audio, images, and games. They can be used in a variety of ways for lessons wihtin the classroom. - Examples include: BrainPop, Discovery Education, Starfall, Room Recess, LearnZillion, and YouTube. Tools That Demonstrate Learning through Artifacts- Artifacts in this context are products that are created by students to demonstrate what they have learned. - These creations can come in the form of videos, podcasts, and other multi-media tools. -Some examples are: Prezi, Google Docs Glogster, KidPix, Picasa, Wordle, GoAnimate, and Lino.No matter what tools you choose to use in your classroom, they should focus on the content to increase student learning and engagement. `
