watercolours
INTRODUCTION___
* Watercolour is an unique type of painting method. Contrast to the opaque acrylic paintings, watercolours are generally transparent where you can see through the pencil marks. By building up layers, the tones and lights and darks of the paint are created. Watercolour paintings could be extremely detailed, or very loose. Since watercolour paintings involve a lot of water, the paintings could be runny and create it's own special effects such as cauliflowers.
* Within the watercolour paintings, there are also numerous different painting styles and techniques involved. The paintings can be done either by using wet on wet, wet on dry, or both. Special effects could also be added by using salt, cling wrap, tissues, and toothbrush.
While painting using watercolours, you paint your background at the very end. For example, during our fish project, we painted in the fishes and other backgrounds such as rocks or seaweeds first. Although everyone's pictures were great, everyone had different painting styles. I personally like to use lots of brush stokes to create lots of layers for toning. Also, I also want my paintings very loose and runny. However, in Vivian's painting, her fish is extremely detailed with specific toning for different areas. Grace also has a extremely detailed painting where the darks and the light are very clear. Overall, I think everyone successfully created a realistic fish from their own style and techniques.
From our watercolour project, I learned distinct quality of the watercolour paints. Although the paints are generally light by using lots of water, some areas could be very dark by paintings lots of layers on top. However, watercolours are all transparent where we can see the pencil marks underneath. The paintings are generally very soft, fluent, and runny creating special effects. Also, while toning, you must paint the lighter areas first because in watercolours, once you paint it, you can not come back. Unlike the acrylic paints, you can not paint light on top of dark because it is transparent. One other thing is that when you paint something, although you erase it off with a tissue, it will still leave a visible mark.
