Walter Hunt

Walter Hunt was born in upstate New York in 1796 and earned a degree in masony.He worked as a farmer in mill town of Lowville ,NY and designed more efficient machinery for the local mills. He recived his first patent in 1826. after moving to New York City to work as a mechanic.He also earned a degree in masony.Walter Hunt's other inventions include a forerunner of the Winchester repeating rifle, knife sharpener, road sweeping machinery, and mail making machinery.

Safety Pin

Walter Hunt invented the saftey pin to pay off his fifteen dollar dept. Walter Hunt was granted US patent #6,281 for his safety pin. His pin was made from one piece of wire, which was coiled into a spring at one end and a separate clasp and point at the other end, allowing the point of the wire to be forced by the spring into the clasp.

Purpose

It was the first pin to have a clasp and spring action and Hunt claimed that it was designed to keep fingers safe from injury of the pin.
