Voting Rights Act

From the PBS News Hour.

Many call these actions Jim Crow Jr. due to the fact that those most affected by these laws are the poor, the elderly and minorities. Supporters of ID laws claim that it fights voter fraud despite the fact real voter fraud is an extremely rare occurrance. Detractors claim the laws are a solution to a non-existant problem.

In a 2013 ruling the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a challenge to the VRA. This would eliminate one of the sections of the law, weakening it. The law is currently facing another challenge that could go before the Court in 2014. However, this is not the only challenge to voting rights as many states have adopted Voter ID laws and placed restrictions on such things as early voting and same-day registration.
