Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet)

Widely considered one of France's greatest Enlightenment writers, Voltaire was born François-Marie Arouet to an upper-middle class family on November 21, 1694, in Paris, France. He was the youngest of five children born to François Arouet and Marie Marguerite Daumand.When Voltaire was just 7 years old, his mother passed away. Following her death, he grew closer to his free-thinking godfather.

1694 - Birth 1704 - "Blooming" Writer1715 - Exiled to Tulle1726 - Sent to Bastille (again)1733 - Published Letters on the English Nation which angered French government1764 - Published Dictionnaire Philosophique which inspired those to go against catholic church1778 - Death (in his sleep)

His first tragedy that he wrote in 1717-1718 while in prison in Bastille called Œdipe. This was one of the first times he identified himself by his new pen name, Voltaire, which brought him fame.Voltaire then published Essay on Manner and Spirit of Nations, Voltaire created the first modern essay that compared the history of nations. This was a great accomplishment for Voltaire.

Lasting Impact

Voltaire has gave a lasting impact on society because he formed this idea of rebellion against conformity, and to believe strongly in yourself.
