Volcanoes

Good or Bad?Volcanoes can be both good and bad. - Create land mass and islands - Source for metals, gold, silver, opal, molybdenum, copper, zinc, lead, and mercury. - Rock used in making roads - Release some healthy gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide- Volcanic soil is rich in nutrientsClick HERE for a full list of benefits!Hazards:- Explosions- Lava Flows- Ash- Pyroclastic flows/ Surges- Landslides- Earthquakes- Ground Deformation- Tsunamis- Air shocks- Poisonous gas- Glacial ourburst flooding

What is a volcano?A vent or chimney like structure that transfers magma (molten rock) from deep within the Earth to its surface.

Volcanoes!

Volcanoes are measured by Volcanic Explosivity Index or VEI which is based on a number of things that can be observed during an eruption

Shield Volcanoes:- magma is hot and runny- broad, flattened dome-like shape- easy lava flow

Composite (Strato) Volcanoes:- Explosive eruptions- Magma cools, making it hard for gas bubbles to expand/ escape...pressure causes the magma to explode violently (volcanic ash)

Actions to take for ASH FALL?

Volcanoes can be:1. Active: currently erupting lava, releasing gas or generating seismic activity2. Dormant: not doing any of the above3. Extinct: dormant for more than 10,000 years!

Caldera Volcanoes:- Eruptions are violent & leave the magma chamber partly/completely empty- Leaves no support around the vent & eventually causing it to collapse- Rare but most dangerous with widespread ash fall, large pyroclastic surges and tsunamis from the caldera collapse

(What is a Volcano? , 2011)

Causes & Where It's Found:Volcanoes are caused frequently at the boundaries of the Earth's plates, where they are either moving towards each other or away from each other (Convergent & Divergent).(What is a volcano?, 2011)

Examples:Shiveluch, Klyuchevskaya, Bezymianny, and Karymsky in Kamchalka Penninsula- Russia's far east region. April 2, 2010.*One of the most volcanically active regions on Earth.*At least 14 kamchatkan volcanoes have erupted in the past 12,000 years.Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland. March 20th 2010- April 7th.*Fire fountains 100-200m high*500m long volcanic fissure*Caused almost all flights to closeMt. Pelee, French Caribbean Island of Martinique. April 23, 1902.*25,00 killed from pyroclastic flow.*Many animals and people killed from surfaced snakes and insects.

What can counteract the mighty volcano?Giant earthquakes can sometimes sink volcanoes.
