[2014] Lizzy Jenkins: Volcanoes

Want more information?Check out this awesome website!Oh, and while your there maybe watch a video or two!

Types of Volcanoes: Shield, Cinder Cones & Composite Cones. The earth spits out lava, rock fragments, hot vapor and gases during volcanic eruptions.

Most Destructive Volcano...Mount Vesuvius

How do we measure these events? The volcano explosivity index (VEI) is a scale used to measure the intensity of volcano eruptions. As far as I know the highest magnitude of a volcanic eruption is 8 out of 10.

Where do volcanic eruptions occur? Most volcanoes occur near the edges of tectonic plates. When tectonic plates push together, one plate slides beneath the other. This is a subduction zone.

What is the Cause and (bad) Effect of an EruptionWhen plates push together, one plate slides beneath the other. This is a subduction zone. When the plunging plate gets deep enough inside the mantle, some of the rock on the overlying plate melts and forms magma that can move up and erupt at the Earth's surface. Ash gets discharged very high into the stratosphere and that has negative effects on the ozone layer.

Other countries and how they are effected. The place/town/city where the volcano has erupted needs aid and the people that help are from other countries. Which means that it forms a bond. Also some of the other countries might have been effected by the acid and the gases. There could have also been people on holiday from other countries when the eruption strikes.

This World map shows where the world's volcanoes are located

What is the (good) Effect of an Eruption The main good effect that volcanoes have on the environment is to provide nutrients to the surrounding soil. Volcanic ash often contains minerals that are valuble to plants, and if it is very fine ash it is able to break down quickly and get mixed into the soil. Another benefit might be the fact that volcanic slopes are often rather unreachable, especially if they are steep. Which means they can provide shelter for rare plants and animals from the consequences of humans and livestock. Volcanic gases are the source of all the water (and most of the atmosphere) that we have today. The process of adding to the water and atmosphere is pretty slow, but if it hadn’t been going on for the past 4.5 billion years or so the world would be a very different place . Volcanoes have done wonderful things for the Earth. They helped cool off the earth removing heat from its interior. Volcanic eruptions have produced the atmosphere and the water of the oceans. Volcanoes make islands and add to the continents.

What gases come out of a volcano?Volcanic gases include carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrochloric acid and carbon monoxide. Also the produce water vapor
