What I think will happen?

The combination of baking soda and vinegar creates an exothermic reation in which carbon dioxide is released along with water solution.


What happened & Why?

Once all of the ingredients were added, the volcano erupted! This is because the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar created a release of carbon dioxide in the form of bubbles. The water solution was released in the form of the liquid paired with the bubbles. The carbon dioxide also created a smoke-like gas that was emitted from the top of the volcano.

How does combining baking soda and vinegar in a paper mache volcano allow it to erupt? This experiment will give you great insight into exothermic, chemical reactions and why they happen! Use hyperlinks and research books offered on this resource page!

-Make paper mache volcano (class instructions found at this link --> http://web.uvic.ca/~mroth/438/VOLCANO/PAPER_MACHE.html)- Make sure everyone is wearing protective goggles- Place the baking soda in the volcano top- Measure out the vinegar and slowly pour into the top of the volcano-Watch the magic happen!
