Vlatadon monastery

The monastery is located at an altitude of 120 meters and has a beautiful view of the city of Thessaloniki.

At the Northeast end of the Walls of Thessaloniki, near a Paleologan tower and the middle gate of the Acropolis lies the Monastery Vlatadon characterized as patriarchal and Patriarchal basilica.

Today, the monastery belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Costantinople. Of the original complex only the Catholicon survives Near the church, which way dedicated to the Christ Almighty and today hounors the Transfiguration of the Saviour there is a vaulted chapel with 14th-century frescoes. Accordingto the local tradition the Monastery was built in the place where the Apostle Paul lived and preached during his stay in the city.

The Vlatadon Monastery known as Tsaous Monastery is a monastery in Upper City of Thessaloniki, 80 meters from the walls of Eptapyrgiou. It is the only monastery of the Byzantine period the city that still works today.

The Catholican is a cruciform church with octagonal brick dome in the center and a closed arcade in western saithern and northern side.In the east it ends in two chapels.Inside the church there are murals dating from between 1360 and 1380.In the vestry of the monastery there are kept many and remarkable icons (12th - 19th century),holy relics,manuscripts and documents.
