Vasco da Gama

- In 1497, he was commissioned by the Portuguese king to find a maritime route to the east.  - When Vasco da Gama was young, he joined the navy, where he was taught how to navigate

- Vasco da Gama was known as a tough and fearless navigator. - Gama's ship was 200 tons and was named St. Gabriel. - Vasco da Gama solidified his reputation as a reputable sailor when, in 1492, King John II of Portugal dispatched him of the south of Lisbon and then to the AlgarveRegion of the country.

Vasco da Gama died in Cochin from possibly overworking himself. His body was sailed back to Portugal, and was buried there, in 1538.
