Vasco da Gama - Acesssed: 21/08/2013 21/08/2013 22/08/2013

Vasco da Gama was the first navigator to sail directly from Europe to India.

He was born in Sines, Portugal, into a noble family in 1460 but little is known about his childhood. In 1497, he was commander of an expedition for the Portudese government to try and find a route to the East.

In Europe spices from India were very popular but the only way to get them was over land which was a very expensive trip and took a long time, so the King of Portugal gave Vasco Da Gama a fleet and 170 men to find a way to India through the ocean.

On the 8th of July, 1497, Da Gama left Portugal with four ships, Sao Rafael, Sao Gabriel, the Berrio and a fourth ship that was unnamed and used for storage.
