Reasons to Stay ( Re-enlist)

Valley Forge

-the sickness of the men-loyalty to my government-belief in our cause

Evidence

-Half of the army too sick for roll call (Doc A)

-1800 to 2500 will die from illness (Doc A)

Argument

Can't let my friends diefor nothing. Must fightfor fallen comrades.

Reasons to Quit/Not Re-enlist

- mortality rate was too high- need to go home to help family- conditions of camp are poor

Evidence

- Estimated 10,000 deaths due to illness in camp (Doc. A)- Concerned about aging mother (Background Essay)-It is cold; some of the men are barefoot (Doc. B)

Argument

The health and survival odds were not good. In February 1778, a soldier's chance of being sick enough not to be able to report for duty were one out of two. One's chance of dying due to illness was high.
