To see how well astronauts will be able to move in space while wearing the pressurized suit, it was tested on an airplane flying steep parabolas to provide moments of simulated zero gravity.

The gravity-defying flights use parabolas, special flight patterns in which the jet makes a steep climb and then smoothly "pushes over" into a shallower descent to create 25 seconds of weightlessness.

The aircraft and sub-orbital rockets trace out parabolas.

Parabolic flights are used to conduct short-term scientific and technological investigations in microgravity and reduced gravity, to test instrumentation prior to use in space, to validate operational and experimental procedures, and to train astronauts for a future space flight.


A reduced gravity aircraft is a type of fixed-wing aircraft that provides brief near-weightless environments for training astronauts, conducting research and making gravity-free movie shots.
