Uranus

Temperature Range: -371 degrees F to -315Coldest in Celsius: -244/ General in F: -300s Weather-COLD-Strong Winds-little temperature difference between Summer and Winter-Seasons: only Summer and Winter-Why: Axis is at about a 90 degrees tilt

William, the discoverer, lived in England, so when he discovered this planet, King George III (King at the time) rewarded him. William showed his thanks by naming the planet Georgium Sidus(George's Star). The other astronomers around the world kept to the tradition of naming the planets after Greek and Roman Gods. These planets are named in a specific way. Each planet is the son of the following planet. For example, Jupiter is the father of Mars and Saturn is the father of Jupiter, so they named this planet after the father of Saturn, Uranus.

Origin of Name

The blue planet that's not that blue

-7th from the sun-2.9 x 10 to the ninth km (2.9 billion) from the sun-gravity 9/10 of Earth-if 100 lbs- Earth; about 90 (89/91) lbs there-one Uranus day= little over 17 Earth hours-Orbit takes 84 Earth years(about 30,500 Earth days)-about 40 thousand Uranus days in a Uranus year

Temperature and Weather

RingsHow Many? 13-Inner rings- dark grey, opaque-Outer rings- light blue/white, brighter-Characteristic- all pretty narrow-Composition: Water Ice & other materials-3 ring groups: Narrow Main, Dusty, + Newly Discovered

Discoverer- William HerschelPlace- EnglandHow-through his own-made telescope; thought not star but maybe comet; studied it and said must be a planetWhen- March 13, 1781

CompositionCore- made of Iron; Rocky-thought to have icy materialSurface- mainly 3 ices(Methane, Ammonia, and Water Ice)-not solid(gaseous); not well-defined

Appearance-BlueSurface=featureless-regardless of strong winds-has skinny rings-axis at 90 degree angle from vertical(looks horizontal)

Moons-there are 27-they range in sizes-some are small sheperd moons-named after Shakespearean Characters (not Greek/Roman people)

Specific Moons1. & 2. Titania and Oberon-two largest of five major moons; first discovered3. Miranda-last discovered of major moons; completely made of ice(not rock + ice)

Gases of AtmosphereMajor- Hydrogen 83%Minors: Helium 15% Methane 2%Note: Methane- gives planet blue color
