Purple symbolized wealth!

Roles of Men:-patricians-controls senate-patricians comes from Latin word "patres" meaning father-had power over family-experienced finest luxuries-they were wealthy land owners from old families-also had military and religious leadership

Roles of Women:-were citizens, but couldn't vote or hold political office-were not equal to men-had guardians- usually father or husband-for entertainment they went to dinner parties or the theatre with their husbands -married at 12- usually started careers at 30

Upper Class of Ancient Rome

Roles of Children:-had their own rooms-had lots of toys-only children in wealthy families went to school-learned to write in Latin and Greek, learned to read, make speeches, and do math

Houses:-lived in houses made of bricks with a tiled roof-courtyards faced in and protected them from burglars-mosaics on walls and floors-very little furniture and carpeting-had house in city and villa in country-households run by slaves-houses w/ courtyards were called domuses-sometimes had private baths

Dinners and Food:-elaborate dinners-women and children ate separate from men-lasted hours at a time-enjoyed dinner parties-3 courses-appetizers,main meal, and dessert-ate peacock tongues-even ate ostrich and flamingo-variety of wines-sometimes even cooked animals inside of animals-liked to use spices in their food such as cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and cloves-had eggs,shellfish,vegetables for appetizers-had meat or cooked vegetables for an entree- pastries for dessert

Clothing:-men wore togas or tunics-women wore stogas which were like long tunics and also wore pallas which were like sashes-children wore belted tunics-similar to lower classes-made of more expensive fabrics-also had fabrics dyed
