William Shakespeare was probably the most famous author in historic literature. Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small town about 90 miles northwest of London. He was living in London by 1592 and writing poems and plays. Shakespeare grew up in the Elizabethian Age. He revered the classic Renaissance writers as an inspiration. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets, or a poem of fourteen lines using rhymes. His works display a deep understanding of human beings. He revealed the souls of men and women through scenes of dramatic conflict. Many of these plays examine human flaws. His plays premiered in the Globe Theater.
