UDL-Universal Design for Learning:UDL is a framework that looks into how people learn and how to best teach. UDL provides flexibility in instruction for both students and teachers to optimize the knowledge gained. MTSS-Muliti-Tiered System of Supports:MTSS is a systemwide approach that includes both RTI and PBIS. It is an approach that targets both academics and behavior. The "tier" system is a system in which students receive support when they need it. All students are part of the first tier, then, as needed, tiers two and three are used. https://www.cde.state.co.us/mtss/whatismtss

Differentiation In both RTI and PBIS, teachers are given the freedom to manipulate the lessons to fit the need of the class. Changing the lessons so students understand the content better helps students stay in the tier 1 instruction and helps them learn and grow.

RTI- Response to Intervention:RTI is a system that focuses mostly on academic issues. RTI starts with all students, assessing each one to see which type of help they would benefit from. Tier 1 is the universal tier that includes all students. If additional support is needed, students then move on to tier 2, and then tier 3. If the student is still not progressing, special education referrals are then made. Instruction in all tiers consists of high-quality, research based approaches. Students and teachers work together to gain knowledge. Progress is monitored and shared with parents to track their students' progress throughout their educational experience. http://www.rtinetwork.org/learn/what/whatisrtiPBIS- Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports:PBIS is the behavior portion of MTSS. PBIS focuses on teaching students positive social skills and ways to be better students outside academics. Much like RTI, PBIS is a tiered system that starts with all students in Tier 1, and moves students to different tiers based on need. Over/Under Representation:Disproportionality between races in special ecuation has become an issue in recent history. Students of color are being referred to special education at a higher rate than that of their white peers. The students of color who are placed in special education experience low-quality curriculum and are often away from their peers in pull-out rooms with other children with disabilities. In most states, black children are labeled with intellectual disabilities 1-4 times the rate of white children. Marginalization also occurs in special education. Hispanic and Asian children are underidentified with cognitive disabilities compared to white children, making it seem as though they are not receiving the support they need. Implementing RTI and PBIS is schools will help decrease the disproportionality that we see in special education by giving support to students in different ways instead of referring them as soon as they fall behind. http://www.education.com/reference/article/special-education-programs/
