In Unashamed, Francine Rivers takes the story of Rahab told in Joshua and uses the Bible story as a basis for her work of fiction. Rahab was a prostitute who did not grow up learning about God. She did hear the stories of the Israelites' God, and how powerful He was. Rahab believed that He was the one, true God, and she had faith in Him, even though no one around her did. Her conflict was with her people and family who didn't believe in God. She believed that the gods of her people were not real gods, and had faith even when her family turned on against her. The story is told from her point of view.
