Stalin enforced agricultural collectivization that "forced farmers to give up their private land, equipment and livestock, and join state owned, factory-like collective farms." The kulaks rebelled, refusing to join these farms. As a result, the kulaks were taxed harder and they were asked to give a greater amount of grain.
One-and-seven-tenths million tons of grain was being shipped to other Western countries, a fifth of a ton for every starving man, woman, and child.
Blockades were formed to stop any food from coming into the villages or the hungry from leaving to find food. Officials were brought in to confiscate hidden food, harshly punishing them if they were found with food.

The Ukrainian genocide is also called Holodomor. Holodomor means death by forced starvation. Holodomor was an attack on Ukrainian villages, mostly against the kulaks. Kulaks are the "Soviet label for those who owned a slightly larger that average plot of land and had hired labor."
