Types of Rocks

Types of Rocks Mrs. Spilker's Class

Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools and solidifies. There are different types of igneous rocks including basalt and granite. The picture above shows igneous rock that cools below the earth's surface, which causes it to crystalize. Large crystals form in the rock because of the slow cooling that is happening.

Metamorphic rocks have been changed over time by pressure and heat. They can be formed underneath the earth's surface through pressure, or on top by the eat of magma. Differenty types of metamorphic rock include marble and slate.

Igneous Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed over time as sediment deposited. Usually sediment is collected at the bottom of lakes and oceans. Examples of these types of rocks include sandstone and limestone. Sedimentary rock is usually flaky and can break off easily.
