1890BILTMORE ESTATEBetween 1890 and 1895, the the largest privately owned house in the United States was constructed. The Biltmore Estate was constructed by the wealthy decendants of Corneilies Vanderbilt. It stands today as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the Gilded Age.

1881WHITE FURNITURE COMPANYThe White Furniture Company was a major producer of hand crafted fine furniture for over a century. It was founded by the White Brothers of Mebane, North Carolina.

1869TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROADOn May 10, a golden spike was driven at Promontory, Utah, signaling the completion of the first railroad that played a major role in connecting the East and Western coasts of the United States.

1896PLESSY VS. FERGUSON This Supreme Court decision upheld the constitutionality of state laws requiring racial segregation in public facilities under the doctrine of "separate but equal."

1885GASOLINE AUTOMOBILEIn 1879, Karl Benz was granted a patent for his first engine, which had been designed in 1878. His first motorwagen was built in 1885 in Mannheim, Germany.

1920SUFFERAGE MOVEMENTThe 19th Amendment to the Constitution granted American women the right to vote. This was a movement due to woman suffrage.

1898SPANISH AMERICAN WAROn April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with Spain losing its control over the remains of its overseas empire, and the U.S. gaining more global control.

1919PROHIBITIONThe Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution effectively established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the United States by declaring illegal the production, transport and sale of alcohol.
