Classification

Domain: Bacteria; Phylum: Actinobacteria; Class: Actinobacteria; Order: Actinomycetales; family: Mycobacteriaceae; Genus: Mycobacterium; Species: Tuberculosis

The primary stage of TB does not cause symptoms. When symptoms of pulmonary TB occur, they can include: cough, coughing up blood, excessive sweating, especially at night, fatigue, fever, weight loss.

Tuberculosis is a curable disease. It can be treated by taking several drugs for 6 to 9 months. Without proper treatment, more than half of people with active tuberculosis will die within five years. People with tuberculosis infection should always cover their mouths when they cough or noses when they sneeze.

The TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with the disease coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected. TB occurs in every part of the world. However, sub-Saharan Africa carried the greatest proportion of new cases per population.
