tsunamis are typically caused by large, undersea earthquakes at tectonic plate boundaries. When the ocean floor at a plate boundary rises or falls suddenly it displaces the water above it and launches the rolling waves that will become a tsunami.Tsunamis are difficult to measure because many factors, such as shape of ocean floor, shape of coast, size and location of earthquake generating the tsunami, can effect their size and destructive potential. Often tsunami are measured after the event by looking at the damage. However, like earthquakes, a comparison of intensity can give an idea of the destructive potential.

A tsunami is a series of ocean waves that sends surges of water, sometimes reaching heights of over 100 feet, onto land. These water walls can cause widespread destru- ction when they crash on land.


The reason that tsunamis should concern us: Within the last century there have been 94 destructive tsunamis which have had 51,000 deaths. Despite the fact that tsunami warning systems have been in place since 1950, deaths still result from tsunamis, especially when the source of the earthquake is close the coast and there is little time for warning, or when no one follows the instructions associated with the warning.

September 29, 2009: SAMOA - A tsunami sparked by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake flattens villages and resorts in Samoa and the neighbouring Pacific islands of American Samoa and northern Tonga, killing more than 190 people.

Most tsunamis (about 80%) happen within the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” a geologically active area where tectonic shifts make volcanoes and earthquakes common. The best defense against any tsunami is early warning that allows people to seek higher ground. If this is not possible for you to do, you should grab on to anything that can be used as a floatation device.

On March 11, 2011, off the Pacific coast of Japan, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake produced a tsunami 33 feet (10 m) high along Japan's northeastern coast. The wave caused widespread devastation, with an official count of 18,550 people confirmed to be killed/missing
