[2014] Olivia Grant: Tsunami

The effect after a tsunami

How do people measure Tsunamis?People can measure tsunamis with a Deep-Ocean tsunami detection buoy to confirm the existence of tsunami waves, generated by undersea earthquakes. They can also observe and record changes in the sea level out in the ocean.

How do these significant events connect people and places? They can connect people and places because people might want to help because family members live there or they like to have holidays where the tsunami has struck so they want to help fix it up so they can keep having holidays there this can connect people. A way that tsunamis can connect places is aid. Countries give aid to help the country fix things up and help people that have gotten hurt in the tsunami, this connects places.

Tsunamis can be sometimes caused by the impact of an asteroid or a meteorite in the sea. The more frequent causes are underwater disturbances: a volcanic collapse, landslide or an earthquake. The effect of a tsunami is when it gets extremely large in height, they can damage property and the loss of life. Objects and buildings are destroyed by the sheer weight of the water. They can also destroy boats, bridges, cars, trees, telephone lines, power lines and anything else in its way. Tsunamis can be very destructive and can leave lots of people without families and lots of people homeless. Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes generated in a subduction zone, an area where an oceanic plate is being forced down into the mantle by plate tectonic forces. The friction between the subducting plate and the overriding plate is enormous. This friction prevents a slow and steady rate of subduction and instead the two plates become "stuck".

Factors that influence these Holidays- People help because they might visit the place a lot where the tsunami has struck and they want to help clean it up so they can keep coming back.Family members and friends- People also help because family members and friends might live there and they want to help rebuild their homes.

What is a Tsunami?A Tsunami is a huge wave. A tsunami is a long, high sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbance. They measure between 10and 500 km and they travel through the ocean at more than 700km/h. Sometimes there appears to be just one wave but often there are multiple waves travelling a few minutes apart. Tsunamis can leave devastating effects to the people and the place where it has struck.

How do tsunamis change and affect places?Tsunamis can leave millions of people dead and homeless. They can affect buildings and other structures. Often large areas of land become contaminated with sea water. People are also left with no family and nowhere to go. Tsunamis can be very destructive.

Where do Tsunami events occur and where are they located?80% of tsunamis occur around the 'Ring of Fire', within the Pacific Ocean where the tectonic plates shift making volcanoes and earthquakes common as well.
