The tropical rainforest is found in parts of S. America, N. America, and Asia. Abiotic factors: hot & wet year round; thin, nutrient-poor soils subject to erosion. The average precipitation is 2 meters a year. The average temperatures range between 68 and 93 degrees F. Rainforests belong to a tropical wet climate group and are to remain that way. More than half of Earth’s rain forests have already been lost forever to the insatiable human demand for wood and arable land. Rain forests that once grew over 14 percent of the land on Earth now cover only about 6 percent. And if current deforestation rates continue, these critical habitats could disappear from the planet completely within the next hundred years.

Biome Project; Tropical Rain Forest

Rainforests contain more than half of Earth's animal species. Many of them use camoflauge to hide from predators; some change color to match their surroundings. Animals that live in the canopy have adaptions such as climbing, jumping, and flight. Of the endangered species, the most well-known are Golden Lion Tamarind Monkey, Toucan, Parrots, Jaguars, Sloths, Gorillas, and Bengal Tigers. Although many species compete for food, many cooperate in obtaining their daily meals.

The plant species in the rainforest is so broad that every plant has not yet been discovered. Some native and endangered plant species include Orchids and the Rafflesia Flower. The rain forests of the world are estimated by scientists to contain 80% of the green flowering plants in existence and it is estimated that 2.5 acres of tropical rainforest may contain more than 750 types of trees and 1500 species of higher plants.
