Tropical Monsoon Forest

The wet and dry seasons of the tropical monsoon climate are caused by monsoon winds- seasonal winds that brings about heavy rain or dry conditions.

Tropical monsoon rainforest are found in the Tropics. However, they are found only in places that experience the Tropical monsoon climate.

Where are tropical monsoon forests found ?

Diversity of plant species, flowers and fruits.

The leaves are deciduous. They shed their leaves during the dry season to minimise water loss through transpiration. The leaves have are waxy with drip tips, allowing water to drain off easily. Thi prevents the growth of harmful bacteria.

A tropical monsoon fores has only three vertical layers- undergrowth layer, understorey layer and canopy layer. The lack of water during dry seasons does not allow the trees to grow to great heights.

There are about 200 species of plants in one hectare of the forest. Most trees are hardwood and some are valuable species, like teak, sandalwood and sal. Bamboo and grasses are common species found in the undergrowth. Many of the tree species flower and bear fruit during the dry season while they are leafless.
