The Trojan War

The war started with the prince of Troy - Paris. He was asked to choose the fairest of three women: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Each women was to offer him a gift, and he chose Aphrodite, who promised him the most beautiful goddess in the world. They escaped to Sparta. In Sparta, Paris fell in love with the Spartan prince's wife, Helen. Paris fled back to Troy with Helen, infuriating the spartan prince, Menelaus. He ordered his brother, King Agamemnon, to build an army to attack Troy and bring back Helen.

The war went on for 10 years, but the Greeks couldn't get past the walls of Troy.

This is a replica of the Trojan Horse. After the Greeks couldn't get into Troy, they built a giant wooden horse. The inside was hollow so the Greek soldiers could fit in. They left the horse outside the gates of Troy, acting like they had surrendered. The Trojans took the horse inside the gates, taking it as an example of defeat from the Greeks. During that night, the Greeks escaped from the horse and ambushed the city.

Here is a painting of the war on a vase. The soldiers are shown with large shields and spears.

This war was a way for Zeus (the king of the gods) to reduce the ever-growing population.

Ares, god of War, called Terror and Panic to yoke his horses, while he himself put on his gleaming armour. -Iliad

Here's a drawing of what the soldier's armor looked like. Their chests, heads, and lower legs were all covered with a suit of armor.
