Trichinosis is caused by the infection of Trichinella spiralis (a type of nematode) larva. It usually is contracted through the digestion of undercooked food mostly pork and wild game. When in the body these worms can spread throughout the body to effect other tissues particulary muscles. Trichinosis can cause abdominal discomfort, diarrea, and nausea while confined to the digestive tract. When in muscles the worms can cause muscle aches, itching, fever, and occasional joint pain. These symptoms are typically seen about two to eight weeks after digestion. Most of the time treatment is not needed in treating this infection as the worms die in time and the body elimantes the waste. In more extreme case drugs can be digested to kill the worms within the body and stop the infection.
